carmelyn and joel - engagement session at muir beach

commentator: monica

carmelyn and joel are such a naturally affectionate couple, so much so that as we pulled into the parking lot of muir beach, we could have photographed them just as they were. after the extreme heat wave we experienced earlier in the week, this sunday in this part of the bay area proved to be a chilly one with lots of coastal fog. this gorgeous couple didn't mind, as we explored the intimate beach full of awesome rocks. towards the end of the session, we made a trip about half a mile up from the beach at the "overlook," where we found shelter from the cold in one of the base-end stations.

congratulations, karm & joel! we hope you enjoyed a safe flight back home to san diego.

jaclyn and michael's engagement session

commentator: monica

lately, we've been getting quite few requests from out-of-staters wanting to do an engagement session in san francisco. and why not? it's such a great place and a great time of the year for photos. keep 'em coming, folks!

jaclyn & micheal, pro ball player for the colorado rockies, are from tennessee and are engaged to be wed later this year. for this shoot, ed and hamilton photographed this couple. from what i've heard and from the pictures i've seen, these two are strikingly gorgeous and super down-to-earth!!! the engagement session started at the japanese tea garden, where the park is open for free to the public during the first hour on certain weekdays. even better was the fact that no one else was in the park. score and score! with time to spare, ed and hamilton took the couple to stow lake's awesome waterfall.

the rest of the engagement session was spent at baker beach, where jaclyn & micheal were able to play around in the sand. fortunately, the weather was clear enough to catch a great view of the golden gate bridge.

congratulations on your engagement, jaclyn & micheal! may you both enjoy a beautiful wedding & life-long marriage!

we're featured on studio msv's "take-a-look" tuesday!

commentator: monica we're really flattered that andrew of studio msv invited us to participate in his site's "take-a-look tuesday," where he features a different wedding professional each week. although we only met recently this year, it turns out that he is cousins with one of my college roommates during my bruin days. thanks so much for the feature, andrew!

Take-a-Look Tuesday #5: Ed Pingol Photography

I met Ed and Monica for the first time at my relaunch party in February. They were really nice and easy to talk with. A good mixture of talent, humility, and humor, this is Ed Pingol Photography... Let's Take-A-Look...

Chelseaandbjaftershoot0020copy1

1) Which is better: A photo that you love but everyone else hates or a photo that you hate but everyone else loves?

It depends on who you're asking. Art is so subjective so whoever the viewer is can only decide for him/herself. Lucky for us, we're the bloggers so we get to decide to publish the photos we love. Fortunately, it seems like many would agree with us. Unfortunately, Ed is notorious for taking horrendous photos of family members which he loves and sometimes posts on the blog. Don't worry, he doesn't do this to our clients. He says he takes bad photos so he knows what NOT to do. Sure...

2) Complete this sentence: "Besides other photographers, I look up to _______ as a major source of artistic inspiration."

Besides other photographers, I look up to "Super Heroes" as a major source of artistic inspiration. Seriously. They have cool poses! Since they're not "real," I guess it would actually be the comic book illustrators.

3) You have gained a certain amount of press for your technological innovations in the industry. Can you share a little about what you've done and why it makes your work different than others?

OCF with the help of my VAMLS. That's Off-Camera Flash with the help of my Voice-Activated Mobile Light Stand. (Thanks Dave for coining that term for us! VAMLS = Monica.) When we first began shooting, a friend of our's who was also into photography, brought along a monopod, which we realized could be mounted with a flash for some cool effects. Turns out this is definitely not a new thing and with further research, I learned a ton about OCF and other techniques through the following sites:

Strobist - lighting 101 (a must read, but don't take it all in one day cause it's a lot) Flash Flavor - Get Ideas, Get Inspired Ken Rockwell - how to get great colors Neil Cowley - making light real Michael Quack - DIY master PlanetNeil - techniques for on camera flash Dave Black - awesome awesome lighting techniques explained DG28 - learn plenty of techniques

4) Besides making sure each other are safe, what item or items would you risk your life to save if your home caught fire?

Photos, for sure! Well, not exactly, since our digital images are triple-backed up, which we recommend EVERYONE does!!! Hmmm... That's a tough one. Probably, our Honda Civic Hybrid, since it's got the HOV carpool lane sticker. Ain't no more left of those and we know how useful they are in the Bay Area!!! Plus, have you seen how expensive gas prices are lately?!?

5) A friend of mine once described your work as "edgy" and "gangsta fresh". Do you think that's accurate and what other words would you use to describe your style?

Pingolcollage06

"Gangsta Fresh!?!" Ha, that's hilarious! It's funny you say that since shortly after we began photographing weddings, a rap artist asked us to photograph images for his CD cover. We asked him, "Seriously, you want a wedding photographer to shoot your rap album photos?!" He was confident we'd provide him with something different than he'd seen among his peers' images. Thankfully, he loved them.

I suppose you could call us "edgy" since we're definitely different from traditional wedding photography. We've also heard the terms "modern," "vibrant," "contemporary," "personalized," "creative," and "fashion-y." For us, it's hard to really describe our style since we feel like we're still learning the vast array of photography skills and don't try to pin ourselves down to one type of style. We do try to include a lot of architecture and scenery by shooting "wide" and using OCF.

6) You guys work pretty well as a team - how does being married help you in your craft and during a shoot?

Couples really trust us knowing that we're a husband-and-wife photography team, which makes our job easier. Also, a wedding is a very intimate event, especially during the bridal preparation time, when the bride, her bridesmaids, and family members are getting dressed. Having a woman be able to check first that everyone is "decent" for photographs and the fact that the wife of the male photographer is present in the room allows everyone to feel more comfortable. Ed has the guys' perspective, while Monica has the woman's perspective and since we're married, we can be bluntly honest with one another, when necessary, about what will and will not work during photo sessions and events. Plus, there's been a couple of occasions where Monica has literally spoon-fed Ed during a reception, in order to avoid missing out on a very fast-paced reception. Hard to ask just any ol' assistant to do that!

7) If a bride and groom invests in Ed Pingol Photography to document their wedding day, what kind of experience can they expect?

We love to have fun during our photo sessions. Ed will pose flamboyantly for you and may not be "locatable" during your ceremony and reception, since he'll stealthily be everywhere. (He swears he's a photo ninja!) Monica will get her upperbody workout as the VAMLS and will probably "blind" you temporarily with flash. We will more than likely ask you to climb, run, jump, hike, hang, lay, lift, twirl, swing, or a combination of movements, to get the shot!

Collagehelenaandandypingol22

8) On a more personal note, my cousin-in-law was a college roommate of yours. Do you have any funny/embarrassing stories to share?

Well there was this one time...... Wouldn't you like to know, Andrew! Let's just say Monica and her roommates were big fans of some show that your cousin-in-law might be a little hesitant to admit to. We do remember her yummy Bak Choy & Chinese Sausage Fried Rice dish. Mmmmm....

chelsea and bj's aftershoot

commentator: monica

we heart aftershoot sessions! even after having an awesome, scenic wedding on the north shore, chelsea and bj opted to indulge in an unhurried afternoon in the city with us to capture more photographs of the two newlyweds. having had such a beautiful celebration on the island of oahu, they both wanted a beachy setting. in contrast, we suggested a more urban-esque area near the water at the sutro bath ruins, which they were totally down for. we definitely got our workout that afternoon, climbing up and down rocky cliffs and across rubble. thanks to our good friend peter of mellange studio for coming along to videograph our session.

congratulations to you both again on your nuptials, chelsea & bj!

happy mother's day!!!

commentator: monica

oh "mother," was it ever hard to decide on a winner from our mother's day contest. all the mothers nominated are all admirable and awesome women! thanks so much for all the entries that made us have to close our computer screens and feign "allergies" while we were sitting at coffee shops the last few weeks. dang pollen! so difficult in fact was it to judge the winner, that we designated a few of our friends as our panel of judges to blindly judge the entries. seems like they still they had a pretty tough time. without further ado, the winner is.... (drumroll...)

....
melanie!

here's melanie's winning entry:

I’d like to enter my mom, Lydia, for the contest. As clichéd as it sounds, my mom is the greatest mom in the world. She was diagnosed w/ kidney disease 25 years ago. Costly medical bills practically wiped out all my parents’ savings and assets. Her deteriorating health and inability to care for her young children forced her to make the painful decision of giving us up for adoption. She had hoped that our adoptive parents (my uncle and aunt) could give us a better life in the US. Throughout all this, my mom remained strong in her faith. In the following years, my mom gained back her health and has continued in her ministry to serve the Lord and others that are less fortunate. My mom thinks the “borrowed years” are due in no small part to her faith. In the last couple of years, she has made several visits to the US from the Philippines. It’s been a treat for her to spend time w/ her grandchildren and make up for the lost time w/ my brother and myself. She came in April 2007 and almost immediate after her arrival, she fell very ill. She was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure and requires routine dialysis. Mom accepted this and was very determined that the disease would not ruin the time she longed to spend with her children and grandchildren. At my persistence, she decided to stay in the US to continue her medical care. For me it was an opportunity to finally care for her. I saw it as “the disease that brought us apart finally brought us back together”. These days, mom maintains her health with a strict diet, exercise and keeping up w/ her dialysis appointments. She enjoys her days cooking, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. Her beliefs, strength and perseverance never cease to amaze me. She has moved from having 3 appointments a week down to 2. It may not seem much to the normal healthy person, but for people living w/ renal failure, it’s nothing short of a miracle since the disease is practically irreversible…not to mention 3 extra hours of freedom from being attached to a machine.

Before I keep rambling on about my mom…I want to say thanks for considering her for this contest. Even if she’s not selected, I’m humbled to finally take the time to recognize what an inspiration my mom is to me.

we hope all the entrants get a chance to share the touching words they wrote about their moms, with their moms this mother's day weekend. And to all the moms in our lives, we love you!!! thank you for the love and care you provide to your children and to all of us. =)

lorajean and phillip's engagement session

commentator: monica

lorajean & phillip are such a stylish couple! their outfits might be one of my faves of all e-sessions! this adorable duo met in college, while attending what was then called csu hayward (and is now csu eastbay). we began the session at the embarcadero in san francisco, when the clouds just began to part on that sunday afternoon. we'd always seen this random spider sculpture titled "crouching spider" and decided to have some photographs of lorajean & phillip there. brave as they are, they were willing to climb up the spider for some goofy photos!

afterwards, we headed over to union square, which was abuzz with spring festivities, including singing and dancing performances. lorajean loves to shop so this was a fitting location for their e-session. here, they decided to sport their niners' gear and and fraternity and sorority letters.

congratulations on your engagement, lorajean & phillip! we're so excited for your wedding in the fall!

marjorie and eric's engagement session

commentator: monica

marjorie and eric are such a pair of beautiful, fun-loving "foodies!" seriously, it seemed like we spent as much time photographing them as we did talking about which restaurants we recommend and wish dishes we just have to order next time. they met us early on sunday morning at the japanese tea garden, which was such an awesome time to visit since there were only a handful of other patrons. (this of course, included another set of photographers and their own e-session clients.) the two were lucky enough to have the first part of their photo session documented on video by chris and christine of c3 videography.

we spent the rest of the morning at the embarcadero, around the ferry building and neighboring piers. although the sun wasn't shining as much as we would have liked, it still was a great time for them to bust out their "kanye west" shades. can't you tell these two are big fans? of course, we couldn't end the session with our fellow foodies without having a bite to eat... sweet potato fries and a chocolate peanut butter milkshake from taylor's automatic refresher.

thanks for the light lunch, marj & "e" and congratulations on your engagement! can't wait to see the video footage!
